Quick answer
Mother's Day 2027 is Sunday 7 March, the morning after Wales v England. Run a short set menu with a roast at its centre in two or three fixed sittings, take a deposit and a main-course pre-order with every booking, and open bookings in early February. Add an afternoon tea or a function-room buffet for the groups.
For a pub that serves food, Mother's Day is one of the biggest Sundays of the year, and it is won weeks before it arrives. In 2027 it falls on Sunday 7 March, the morning after Wales play England in Cardiff, so the team that closes late after the rugby on Saturday opens for the busiest lunch of the spring the next day.
The pubs that do well on Mother's Day decide three things early: a set menu the kitchen can send out fast, fixed sittings that let every table work twice or three times, and bookings with a deposit and a pre-order. This guide covers the Mother's Day menu ideas, the sittings, the afternoon tea and buffet alternatives, and the campaign that fills them.

Sunday 7 March, and the rugby weekend before it
Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter Sunday, which is 28 March in 2027. It moves every year, so take the date from the calendar rather than from a template: AI assistants and design templates sometimes give the American Mother's Day, which is in May.
The Six Nations' fourth round lands on the two days before. Plan the weekend as one job:
- Get the Mother's Day delivery in on Friday or Saturday morning, before the rugby crowds arrive.
- Prep on Saturday morning. Puddings, starters and anything that holds can be done before the 2.10pm kick-off.
- Split the team where you can. The people closing on Saturday night should not all be the people opening on Sunday morning.
- Sell Mother's Day to the rugby crowd. During the matches on 20 and 21 February, put a card on every table: "Mother's Day is Sunday 7 March. Book her lunch while you are here."
Mother's Day menu ideas
Mother's Day in a pub is a roast day. Expect most tables to order it, so build the menu around it and make the other choices quick to send.
Starters
- Soup of the day with bread: quick, popular and easy to scale.
- A prawn cocktail, the classic most guests expect.
- A goat's cheese tart or a chicken liver pâté with toast.
Mains
- The roast. One or two meats, such as beef and chicken or lamb, with all the trimmings. Pre-ordered, so the kitchen knows exactly how much of each to cook.
- A fish main, such as salmon, for guests who do not want a roast.
- A vegetarian main that is as generous as the roast: a nut roast with the same trimmings works because it goes through the same pass.
Puddings
- Sticky toffee pudding, a crumble, a cheesecake or a lemon tart, plated ahead and finished to order.
The children's menu
Mother's Day is a family day, and many tables will bring children. A children's set menu at a fixed price, with smaller roasts and a simple pudding, keeps those tables happy and quick.
The Mother's Day set menu and the price
Run two or three courses at fixed prices, with three choices at each course and a separate price for children. Cost every dish before you set the price, and keep supplements to one. Our guide to profitable pub food menus covers costing a menu like this.
A small touch for every mother at the table, such as a single flower, costs little and gets photographed.
Take every guest's allergies and dietary needs at booking. With three generations at one table, there are more of them, and a set menu is the time to get them right. Giving accurate allergen information is a legal requirement (GOV.UK).
Sittings and table turns
On Mother's Day the number of tables, not the number of people who want them, sets your takings.
- Fix the sittings. For example, 12pm, 2.15pm and 4.30pm, with each table for one hour and 45 minutes. Put the table time on the booking, the confirmation and the reminder.
- Count your large tables. Mother's Day tables are big. Count how many tables of six and eight you can lay, and do not sell a table for two as a table for six.
- Cap by the kitchen, not the chairs. Set the number of covers per sitting by what the kitchen can send out at once, then stop taking bookings and start a waiting list.
- Turn tables without rushing anyone. Lay the next sitting's tables as soon as a table leaves, and have the card machine ready when the puddings go out.
- Decide about walk-ins in advance. Either you are fully booked or you hold a few tables, and the whole team gives the same answer at the door.
Afternoon tea and buffet alternatives
Two alternatives let you serve more guests without adding to the pressure on the roast.
Mother's Day afternoon tea menu ideas
An afternoon tea works for the late sitting or a separate room:
- Sandwiches: egg and cress, smoked salmon and cream cheese, ham and mustard, and cucumber.
- Scones with jam and clotted cream.
- Three small cakes: a lemon drizzle, a chocolate brownie and a slice of Victoria sponge.
- A pot of tea for each guest, with alcohol-free and gluten-free versions available with notice.
Mother's Day buffet menu ideas
A buffet suits a family party in a function room, booked as a private hire:
- Sandwiches and wraps, quiches, sausage rolls and a vegetarian alternative to each.
- Salads, new potatoes and coleslaw.
- A cheese board, and a table of cakes for the mothers to choose from.
Label every buffet dish with its allergens, and give each dish its own serving spoon.
Bookings, deposits and reminders
- Open bookings in early February, with the menu, the sittings and the prices.
- Take a deposit per adult when people book, with clear terms on when it can be refunded.
- Take the main-course pre-order by Wednesday 3 March, so the kitchen can order the meat.
- Note highchairs, access needs and allergies on the booking, not on the day.
- Send a confirmation when people book, and a reminder on Thursday 4 March with the sitting time, the table length and their pre-order.
- Keep a waiting list, and call it when a table cancels.
Confirmations and reminders were part of how we cut booking no-shows by 89% at The Anchor, our own venue. On a day of fixed sittings, every table that does not turn up is one you turned another family away from.
The Mother's Day marketing campaign, week by week
- The week of 1 February. The announcement: the menu, the sittings, the children's menu and the booking link. Open Easter Sunday bookings at the same time, for the families who plan ahead. Email the guests who have asked to hear from you, and update your Google Business Profile.
- The week of 8 February. Mention Mother's Day in your Valentine's posts: some of those couples are booking their mothers next.
- The week of 15 February. The food: photos of the roast, the puddings and the afternoon tea. Put the table cards out for the rugby on 20 and 21 February.
- The week of 22 February. An honest update on which sittings are filling. There is no rugby on 27 and 28 February, so this is the weekend to push the last tables.
- The week of 1 March. Last call. Pre-orders close on Wednesday 3 March, and reminders go out on Thursday 4 March. Offer gift cards for people who cannot be there on the day.
- The week after. A thank-you post with the photos, and the next date: Easter Sunday, 28 March.

Keep it responsible
- Check any drinks offer against your licence. A glass of fizz for every mother is a nice idea and a drinks promotion, so check it first. In Scotland, drinks promotions are tightly controlled (Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005, Schedule 3), so ask your licensing standards officer. In England and Wales, the mandatory licence conditions ban irresponsible promotions.
- Give the drivers a proper choice. Family lunches bring drivers. Stock alcohol-free options worth ordering; our guide to low and no drinks covers the range.
- Ask before you post anyone. Photos of the room are good promotion. Photos of a family's faces, and above all their children, need their permission.
When you are ready for more
Everything in this guide works on its own, and you can run all of it yourself.
When you are ready for change, and want your biggest days to run themselves, with bookings that take deposits and pre-orders, send their own reminders and show you what each sitting earned, that is what Orange Jelly builds. At The Anchor, our own venue, we grew food revenue by 98% in three months.
If that is what you want for your pub, call me on 07990 587315 or email peter@orangejelly.co.uk. The rest of the season, from Burns Night to Easter, is in our Spring Pub Playbook.
